--

Dog owners sometimes feel a little uneasy about trimming their dogs nails. Dont be! It can be done safely and easily with the right nail trimmer and know how.

Dogs Nails
Dogs nails continue to grow throughout their life. Their lifestyle will influence how often they need a nail trim. Dogs who walk regularly on hard surfaces like concrete will need their nails trimmed less often - a good reason to take them for a daily walk. On the other hand, dogs who spend a lot of time on soft surfaces like grass will need their nails trimmed more regularly.

Tools available
There are mainly two types of nail trimmers used to trim nails. Scissor action and guillotine action. Both work well but they do need to be sharp and clean. Like any sharp instrument they will lose their edge and need to be replaced from time to time. If you keep your nail trimmer clean they should last a number of years.

The Trimming Process
There are two types of dogs nails - dark nails and light nails. Trimming light nails is relatively easy as it is usually possible to see the quick inside the nail. The intension is not to touch the quick as it may cause the nail to bleed. So, it is best to take small nibbles rather than larger chunks when trimming. Darker nails can be a little more difficult as the quick is not always easily identifiable. So its best to be careful and only take smaller bites accordingly.

Oops! I accidently cut the quick/vein
Hey this may happen from time to time - so dont worry. The best option if this happens is to place some styptic powder on the end of the bleeding nail. Its a good idea to have either a styptic pen or powder included in your dogs grooming kit. Styptic powder is an antiseptic clotting agent. In the event bleeding does not stop within a few minutes contact your veterinarian.
